Especially in cities, the bicycle can be a real alternative to the car for short journeys. However, one problem that makes many people hesitate to switch to cycling is road safety. More cyclists die in urban areas (255 in 2018) than car drivers (180 in 2018).
In the Cross Innovation Class, Dataport relied on the input of interdisciplinary student teams to develop new solutions for safe participation in road traffic.
The team of students from five different universities and colleges worked on the company's challenge in the Cross Innovation Class. The different team competences resulted in technically functional prototypes in just one semester.
The Dataport team developed a handle for bicycle handlebars that uses vibrations to warn of particularly dangerous junctions with a high number of accidents. The data basis is provided by the accident atlas of the federal and state statistics portal. This contains all accidents with personal injury and precise location details.
The saflr app checks the GPS status of the cyclist live: if the cyclist is approaching an area with many reported accidents, the handle alerts the rider via vibrations, allowing them to be particularly vigilant.

"Interdisciplinary collaboration breaks up thought patterns and promotes approaches that are reflected in coherent, innovative prototypes."
In the Cross Innovation Class, students from three to six different universities work in interdisciplinary teams on the practical challenges of the project partners.
Cross Innovation Class #2 will take place in the winter semester 2019/20 on the topic of Smart City Solutions.
