medac: Rethinking knowledge transfer

How can the often invisible "gold" of experience be harnessed for an entire organisation? This question was addressed by medac, a global pharmaceutical company, together with the Cross Innovation Hub in a two-day customised workshop format.

The challenge

Knowledge is often available in organisations, but not systematically accessible or usable. Particularly in a dynamic environment such as the pharmaceutical industry, it becomes a key challenge to activate existing expertise in such a way that new ideas are generated and innovation processes are strengthened in the long term.

medac therefore asked itself the question: How can knowledge transfer succeed? And what methods can be used to develop ideas sustainably so that the answer to every idea is not: "Yes, but ..."?

Output

In the workshop, knowledge was understood as a dynamic process - as something that only realises its full value in the right context and in application. Together, the team developed ideas to make existing knowledge more visible, shareable and usable.

The result: the relevance of the topic of knowledge transfer became clear across all departments. Different approaches and concrete next steps and responsibilities for implementation were worked out.

Format & method

In order to move from the abstract topic of knowledge transfer to concrete options for action, the Cross Innovation Hub guided the team through a methodically clearly structured and at the same time playful process - from the joint consolidation of different perspectives to the collaborative development of ideas and the derivation of concrete next steps. Among other things:

  • Shared understanding: Methods such as grid condensation were used to visualise different perspectives, create a shared understanding and develop initial idea clusters.
  • Collaborative ideation: The 6-3-5 method made it possible to further develop and enrich ideas iteratively and across departments.
  • Focus on implementation: By using implementation templates, concrete measures with clear responsibilities and next steps were derived from initial ideas.

  • Sebastian works in both partner and programme management at the Cross Innovation Hub. He is the point of contact for companies that want to turn their challenges into creative innovation projects (partner management), while at the same time actively helping to shape the content and methodology of the programmes (programme management). Through this dual function, he ensures that the needs of the companies flow directly into the creative processes - a win-win situation for everyone involved.

    After training as a media designer for image & sound, Sebastian completed his degree in Media & Information (Dipl.) at HAW Hamburg. His professional experience includes working as a software trainer at Apple and as a senior producer at a digital agency for YouTube formats.

  • Sean Weingarten is Programme Manager in the Conception & Implementation department of the Cross Innovation Hub. Previously, he was part of the Consulting & Training team, where he worked as project manager for the third round of the Creative Future Academy and the Music WorX Incubator 2022.

    He completed his studies at HafenCity University Hamburg in the Culture of the Metropolis programme in 2017. This was followed by a phase of reorientation from cultural studies to artistic-practical work. He studied Digital Media at Leuphana University Lüneburg and Digital Arts at the City University of Hong Kong until 2023.
