TUI Cruises: Reduction of packaging material

TUI Cruises developed ideas for reducing packaging on board.

Due to the increasing demand for sustainable holiday offers, the cruise industry is undergoing radical change. In addition to more sustainable drives, TUI Cruises was also looking for measures on board to reduce its own CO2 footprint. Specifically, the question was how to reduce packaging waste on board the ships.
In collaboration with experts from the creative industries, two key topics were analysed during field research on board the Mein Schiff 4 ship. The following areas of action were identified in the supply chain: Introducing reusable systems together with suppliers in order to recycle packaging and containers; favouring large containers over smaller packaging and introducing recycled or recyclable packaging material. A strap system for securing beverage containers has also been developed to save on the stretch film normally used. Tenders were seen as a particular lever for implementing these recommendations for action: This is where the requirements for suppliers, which have also already been set out in a "Code of Conduct" to date, can be enforced.
In the "guest" area, the field research revealed that the catering industry needs to have a lot of food in stock, as it does not know the individual meal planning of the guest exactly. This in turn makes local and resource-saving shopping in guest harbours more difficult. For this reason, an extension of the existing Mein Schiff® app was proposed, which provides the guest with information on the origin of the raw materials in addition to the food selection. This not only makes it easier for the crew to plan, but also raises awareness of more sustainable behaviour among guests.

In the Cross Innovation Lab, companies come together in changing constellations over a period of six weeks to work together on product developments in a stimulating environment. Experts from the creative industries are specifically involved in the process.
In the iterative work process, companies develop new products or product adaptations in a significantly reduced amount of time.
TUI Cruises is a joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and thus combines tour operator and cruise line under one roof. The company organises cruises under the Mein Schiff brand for the German-speaking market.
